Description

About the area: Dick Van Dyke is located in Surrey, on the edge of the Surrey Hills and the North Downs, parked on a quiet residential street a 10 minute drive from the legendary Box Hill and Denby’s Vineyard. There are a dizzying amount of National Trust locations, properties and trails nearby, and central London is just a 40 minute train ride away.

Description of Beds: Dick Van Dyke sleeps four people, two downstairs and two in the pop-top which can also be used without the bed pulled down for extra headspace and room during the day. Both beds have mattress toppers for extra comfort. The lower rib bed is 112 cm wide and 186 cm long and the pop-top bed is 200 cm by 120 cm, this is more suitable for 2 children or one small adult.

Description of Seating: Dick Van Dyke comfortably takes four passengers and the driver but for comfortable living capacity we recommend four people max including the driver. There are three belted seats in the front (including driver) with headrests and two further belted seats (with headrests) in the rear. All five seats have three-point belts and all four passenger seats are suitable for a child car seat using the belt. The back two seats also have Isofix fittings.

Description of Electrical Setup: Dick Van Dyke is run on a 12v leisure battery with an inverter for 240v when connected at the mains at a camping site, there is also a 100w solar panel to keep the battery topped up. There are three household plug sockets to use when on mains and two 5v USB sockets for charging and running other items. The lights, fridge and sink pump are all able to run on the electricity off-grid and on-grid. The battery has a cut off at low power to protect itself. Up front the sound system is run off the engine battery. There is also a 12v charging point and iPhone lightning charging cable.

Parking: When driving to hire Dick Van Dyke you have two main options, streets nearby (within five minute walk) do offer free parking but with limited availability, alternatively hirers can request a permit for the street which we are happy to provide but will cost a small additional charge per day. If you come by train, the station is a ten minute walk away, or if luggage is a problem collection can be arranged subject to availability and prior arrangement.

Cooking Equipment: Dick Van Dyke’s kitchen is fully stocked, there is a two ring diesel hob and fridge/freezer as well as a variety of pots, pans and utensils. Ensuring you have everything you would need to cook in the space for two adults and two kids. Also included are; a chopping board, a kettle, a frying pan, large and small saucepans, cutlery, plates, bowls, mugs and cups, a tin opener, corkscrew/bottle opener, cooking spoons, 1 sharp knife, a V60 coffee filter (no grinder), a colander and small dustpan and brush. There is an outdoor table as well as two camping chairs for alfresco dining, and an array of rugs and blankets for the British weather.

Water and Sanitation: Dick Van Dyke has two water tanks located under the sink; one for grey water and one for fresh, both are 10 litres which we find is enough for a couple of days. They are easy to remove and top up/empty when necessary from the main or fresh water supply. The sink is run off an electric pump.

Audio Equipment: Dick Van Dyke is truly old school. Have a nostalgic time listening to FM/AM radio. Or dust off those old 90s CDs and rock out to your heart's content. There is a phone holder on the dash which fits all models and an AUX cable to listen to music through your phone or MP3 player. There is an iPhone charger lighting cable to stay charged up. The speakers from the sound system are in the cab, but there is an additional battery bluetooth speaker in the back.

Type of Heating: The cooker doubles up as a diesel heater. There is a fold-up fire pit with enough wood for one fire.

Pet Information: Dick Van Dyke is dog friendly, for small/medium well behaved dogs and we ask that the fabrics are covered before your dog sits on them.

Extra Information: The Scandi-style of Dick Van Dyke has the touch, smell and calmness of the Birch plywood and solid oak worktops, all handcrafted. The wood is treated with oil often to keep it fresh and clean. There is under cabinet and bed storage instead of a wardrobe to keep the 360 degree window views and light. The pop-top is a scenic one, so on a hot sunny day can be opened and used both for a cooling breeze and a way to see the world you are surrounded by. Dick Van Dyke is designed to feel calm and cosy whatever the weather outside, and its clean, simplistic design makes the space feel decluttered, allowing you to leave the chaos of home and chores behind and embrace adventure, exploration and being present in nature.

Conversion Story: Dick Van Dyke started life as a work van and was slowly and lovingly converted by a friend (who happens to be a professor of engineering!). He was loath to separate from it but as his family grew so did his van size and finally he passed it on to us. We expanded his bespoke designs with our own. We didn’t want a factory fit van, but wanted soul and calming materials and colours that could feel like a luxury escape. CXR Conversions worked with us to help create this. So while the van's exterior tells the story of where it came from, the interior gives you the freedom to decide where and when to go.

About the Owner: I surprised my now wife with hiring a Campervan and travelling around Cornwall in January a few years back. The weather was brutal but we had the most amazing time and still consider it one of our best holidays yet. I grew up camping in tents, she did not! She likes nice things and posh coffee… But we are both big fans of road trips and this seemed like the perfect solution. So now, with our young son we can camp in style and ease travelling freely and we love it! We’d love to help others have that same taste of stylish travel and the freedom that we experience.
