Description

About the area: Dr Rocket is based in the famous Robin Hood County of Nottinghamshire, right in the heart of the Midlands. Located close to the M1, A1 and A46, whether you stay local discovering places like Clumber Park (voted most romantic place in the East Midlands) or drive north to the Dales, Peaks, Lakes or to Bonnie Scotland, Dr Rocket will have you there in no time. There is plenty to explore locally including an abundance of National Trust and English Heritage locations, lakes and beautiful rivers. Many of these are recognisable from on screen, the TV series ‘The Crown’ was filmed at Belvoir Castle and the series ‘The Witcher’ was filmed at Gordale Scar. If a literary pilgrimage is more your style, discover the birthplace of DH Lawrence’s on the way to the stunning Derbyshire Dales, Lord Byron’s home at Newstead Abbey and stomping grounds in Southwell and Colwick Hall, or JRR Tolkien’s inspirational walks at Netherfield ponds to tie into the Barrows along the Ridgeway near Oxford.

Description of Beds: Dr Rocket sleeps two comfortably. The Hi-Lo roof accommodates those up to 6 ft 2” lying and standing without bending down and is so sleek it doesn’t even look like a pop-up roof when it’s down, it also gives the highest headroom of all the pop-tops. It has a secret panoramic zip out canopy, so you can look at the stars at night, see the sunset or look over other vans and tents. When not used as a bed the floor can be pushed right up to allow full head clearance, it also doubles up providing extra storage space as a loft.

Description of Seating: Dr Rocket technically carries four passengers, it has four luxury Captain seats with armrests that swivel 360 degrees. The rear seats have ISOFiX fittings with storage underneath. All the seats spin around so you can re-shape the space to your needs, whether it’s breakfast at the built-in table or cinema style to watch a film on the projector. In between the rear seats there is a sliding, spinning and elevating amenity console, with an elevating table able to spin 360 to extend either to the centre or over a chair, it is also a drinks holder, magazine storage and extra storage. Just like the rear seats it also slides back and forth on rails to shape your space. A second table can be set up in the centre of the van, or outside as a dining/coffee table (two heights) with leg attachment.

Description of Electrical Setup: On or off grid, you’ll have no problems, Dr Rocket’s electrical set-up consists of six UK standard 3 pin sockets, six USB’s, two 12 V sockets, a 2500W inverter, two leisure batteries (70 amps and a whopping 290 amps) and one Panasonic 320W solar panel.

Parking: If you drive to collect Dr Rocket you are welcome to park and leave your vehicle where Dr Rocket is usually parked. It’s a very safe off-road location that has CCTV. Should you arrive by train, collection can be arranged at a charge subject to prior arrangement and availability, from the local station in Lowdham, Newark or Nottingham.

Cooking Equipment: Whatever the type of cooking you desire, Dr Rocket provides it inside or outside. There is an induction hob and microwave convection oven (roasts to go!). The whole kitchen unit slides out, so you can choose to cook indoors or out. A Madog Carbon steel cooking set is provided; 3L Dutch oven, with a universal lid that doubles up as a tawa and a 23cm skillet/frying pan. So you can bake, broil, Bain-Marie, fry and boil. This works on the induction hob as well as an open fire when wild camping. Also provided are; a kettle, glasses, mugs, cups, plates, knives, forks, spoons, bottle/can openers, utensils, two ‘Light My Fire’ lunch box kits for pack-ups out on the trail to save on disposable plastic wrappers, a selection of drinks, fresh ground coffee, tea and hot chocolate, with an espresso maker for the induction hob and two double walled stainless steel espresso cups, and a top loading Dometic fridge (no bending down) which also slides out. Also included are a dustpan and brush plus cleaning kit. There will always be a bottle of freshwater in the fridge. You can add the BushcraftBox kit onto your booking as an optional add-on giving you all the gear for open fire cooking plus spices, rubs and marinades.

Water and Sanitation: Dr Rocket has two (under-van) water tanks with 60L fresh water and 30L waste. There is an in-built water level metre, an outdoor shower (not heated, but pressure pumped) that is fed from the fresh water tank. A portable lightweight toilet can also be included as an optional add-on with a tent which can also be used as a shower tent for outside.

Audio Equipment: Dr Rocket has a quality Alpine head unit with Sat-Nav, Bluetooth, DAB/FM, DVD/CD, iPod and HDMI connections, connected to a Cerwin Vega surround sound system and active sub bass unit. There is specially curated and ever growing Spotify playlist called ‘Musical Adventures with Dr Rocket’ that has over 57 hrs of hand selected quality music you can stream to the head unit via Bluetooth. We also offer a Projector as an optional add-on with built in streaming services, such as Netflix and Prime that can be connected via bluetooth to the head unit for that full cinema surround sound experience. or used outside using its own built-in speaker projecting onto a folding 100” screen.

Type of Heating: Dr Rocket has an Eberspacher diesel heater which provides thermostatically controlled warmth within seconds. These are German made heaters and are so efficient, they only use small amounts of diesel while keeping the van nice and warm.

Pet Information: Sorry we don’t accept pets.

Extra Information: We are outdoors people, we love bushcraft, we love to cook, we love to trek and explore, so we wanted to combine all those interests to enable us to go to wild places and make memories, cook great food on an open fire, look at the stars and in the morning leave no trace and move on. So you’ll find our van life is based around wild camping adventures, with all the extras you need to make that happen. Ultimately, we wanted Dr Rocket to be an adventure making machine, something from Willy Wonka for the outdoors.

Depending on your adventure we have lots of extras you can add to tailor to your needs. Dr Rocket does come with folding stools and a table that works indoors, outdoors and converts into a coffee table and a prepping station extension to fold out table on the back of the kitchen, but we have extra folding easy chairs, several different hampers, a fully loaded BushcraftBox for open fire cooking including axe, fire anchors, fire tripod, spice, rubs and marinades and more as optional extra, please check the add-ons section for full details and prices.

It has all the bells & whistles you'd expect including, bluetooth, folding heated mirrors, parking sensors, parking cameras, cornering fog lights, Bi-Xenon headlights, multi-function steering wheel, built in underslung water tanks, BF Goodridge All Terrain tyres and the very unique Twin sliding doors.

Conversion Story: We know pretty much every inch of the van and what it can and can’t do. It took us 18 months to find the right van with the right base spec and then a couple of years to convert. We used the help of our friend Jed (ex-Mercedes mechanic campervan-honcho), a joiner and a seamstress. We’d seen every configuration you could think of in original camper T2 vans, but we were disheartened to find no similar imagination for T5 campers - wherever we went, they all claimed to offer a ‘bespoke design’ but that just wasn’t true, it was the same layout but just different colours and finishes.

So we set to work designing it ourselves, we wanted a year-round vehicle that would be warm in winter and cool in summer with the windows down and not get bitten by insects. No noise going out and no noise coming it. I’m 6ft 2” and hate bending down, so we got the highest roof we could, which is also the most streamlined. Once popped up, you can stand up at the lowest point and cook to your heart’s content without bending down. We also knew cooking inside can be a smelly affair and we love to cook outdoors, so we designed the whole kitchen to slide out so we could cook and prep outside.

Everything has been field tested and nothing is just for show. Even the German-made laser cut steel FENNEK BBQ folds and fits neatly in the van and works a treat. Dr Rocket is tough, but look after it and the good Dr will look after you.

About the Owner: We love travel and the outdoors, but we live busy lives so being able to escape whenever we wanted gave us the freedom needed. We are designers, musicians, adventurers, cooks, artists, readers and stargazers, combining these interests means Dr Rocket has lots to offer and since it wasn't being used all the time we wanted to share the love, knowing there were others that share our passions. when we heard about Quirky Campers who specialised in unique van builds, it seemed like a natural partnership. Their reputation was second to none, which re-assured us into renting our precious Campervan.
