Description

Description of Beds: Hamba sleeps 2 people comfortably on a bed measuring 170cm wide and 190cm long (wider than a superking!).

Description of Seating: There are three belted seats in the front (including driver) with headrests. Main living space can seat 5-6, plenty of space for your mates to join for a meal.

Description of Electrical Setup: Hamba is designed to be used completely off-grid. With 650W of solar panels powering 220aH of lithium batteries as well as a smart charger from the alternator, you should never need to plug-in even in the depths of winter (although you can via an extension cord!). All the electrical components are top of the line from Victron, including a 1600VA inverter/charger. There are two USB outlets and two 3-pin 240V outlets for charging.

About the area: Hamba lives in a quiet village and is parked on a private driveway.

Parking: If you drive to collect Hamba, you are welcome to leave your car in his normal spot on the driveway. If you come by train, Hamba's owners will be able to pick you up from Haddenham & Thames station.

Cooking Equipment: Hamba has everything you could need to cook up a feast, including: a 2 burner hob, 2 big and 4 small mugs/cups, 2 big and 2 small shallow bowls, cutlery for 2, 2 chopping boards, 2 steel mixing bowls, kettle, microplane grater, cast iron pot and frying pan, and a medium stainless steel pot. There is also a very generous 80L fridge & freezer, plenty of space for up to a week's groceries. There are also lots of cooking utensils including tongs and wooden spatulas, sharp knives, and a multi-use bottle & can opener. Hamba also has an Aeropress (fantastic easy coffee machine) and grinder, as well as a small dustpan and brush.

Water and Sanitation: Hamba has a 75L fresh water tank under a bench seat (filled with drinking water only) which pumps directly to the sink and an outdoor shower, and a 20L grey water tank underneath the sink. Hot water is only via kettle. There is a portable toilet with the necessary organic liquid for emergency use.

Audio Equipment: Besides the standard bluetooth speaker on the van, a small portable bluetooth JBL speaker is available so you can play your music when parked up.

Type of Heating: Hamba has a gas Propex heater which keeps the van extra toasty when the temperature dips! It vents right under the dining table to keep your toes nice and warm.

Extra Information: Hamba is a completely self-converted van, down to the hand-sewn cork and felt blinds. He was constructed with as many sustainable materials as possible: sheep's wool insulation, wood fibre board, shoshugibon burned timber, and recycled vapour barriers. The design is inspired by Japanese and Scandinavian architecture so it has a beautiful minimalist feeling while still being comfortable. Despite being a MWB van, it feels extra roomy due to the open bulkhead and linear timber elements. Hamba has been used over the last year as a photographer's off-grid adventure van, exploring the remotest parts of Scotland in all seasons (below -10C in Glencoe!). Hamba is equipped with all-season, 3PMSF, M+S Michelin Agilis Cross Climate tyres for your safety and grip on all surfaces.

Conversion Story: Hamba was a roadside repair vehicle for Scania trucks in a former life. I found him in 2020 just after lockdown in fantastic condition and decided to do a van conversion. As a recent Architecture graduate, I was keen to get my hands dirty on a physical building project and learn the ins and outs of detailing. Hamba was conceived as a tiny-home rather than a typical van, and so the quality of the conversion reflects this. His units are built from high grade birch and ash plywood, and include some of the best off-grid components on the market.
